Sponsor Spotlight: Skype

Skype.com Official sponsor of WordCamp ChicagoI am excited to announce that Skype is now an official sponsor of WordCamp Chicago ’09 – it’s really great to know that a fantastic company like Skype supports the WordPress community!  I made a trip to my business mail drop today because they called to say that I had six rather large boxes waiting for me and if I didn’t pick them up today, they would have to start charging me for the space they were taking up.  I couldn’t remember ordering anything that big, so curiosity was the motivating factor for me to get my butt up and head down there to check out what these boxes contained!

To my (very pleasant) surprise – the boxes were shipped from Skype.  And the mail drop lady was right – they were HUGE.  I opened one of them and found that inside were hundreds of Skype starter kits – enough to give one to every single attendee and speaker at WordCamp Chicago!  WOW – thanks Skype!  The starter kit includes:

  • One Skype headset with microphone
  • One voucher for up to 30 minutes of free calls

For those of you unfamiliar with Skype – it is software that you can download to your computer and use it to place phone calls – you can call other Skype users and even place calls to ordinary phones with Skypes low per minute rates and monthly plans that they have available at their website at Skype.com.  Users are also able to recieve phone calls from their friends on Skype for free and you cna get a personal number that reaches you on Skype, or forward your Skype calls to your cell phone when you’re offline.

I have been a Skype user for several years, and know several of my collegues and pals use it to keep in touch, as well.  It is a really great way to stay connected.

I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to Skype for providing WordCamp Chicago attendees with the starter kits.  I also hope that you all will find it to be a helpful bonus – – for existing users of Skype and for those of you who haven’t tried it yet – this is the perfect opportunity!

Sponsor Spotlight: Margaret Roach

Margaret Roach is a writer, author, editor, internet consultant, blogger and a very generous sponsor of WordCamp Chicago.  I’d like to extend a great big thank you to Margaret for helping us make this happen by offering you, our readers and attendees, the opportunity to get to know Margaret a bit more through her work on the ‘net, and beyond.  Margaret’s journalism career has included positions at The New York Times, Newsday, and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, where she for many years was Executive Vice President/Editorial Director.

You can find a portal into Margaret’s world at her website here: http://margaretroach.com

There, you will find Margaret’s various efforts in writing, gardening, sisterhood and charity work.  Margaret has a profound quote on the front page of one of her websites: http://openyourhands.org/ and it goes like this: “They who give, have all things.  They who withhold, have nothing.” –Hindu proverb  .. words to live by.  That site, OpenYourHands.org, is a a collaborative project with the School Development Committee of Birta Deurali V.D.C. and the residents of the entire village to provide aid in the form of educational materials and equipment, school renovations and maintenance, and teaching stipends for educators and their assistants in rural Nepali schools.  Margaret is the Vice President of the Open Your Hands project.

The Sister Project is another project of Margaret’s which is, as stated on the web site, “a network of blogs about the many facets of the word sister, and the concept of sisterhood. A sisterhood of sister blogs, you could say. Whatever sister means to you, from identical twin to sister-in-law (or in-friendship or in-feminism), we’ll make room to listen in about it or express it on TSP. Like the slogan up top says, “Don’t you have something to say to your sister?” We’ve got galleries of art and literature by and about sisters, and a Sisterpedia of sisterly trivia…but now we’re getting ahead of ourselves.”

A Way to Garden is, as stated on the web site, the latest horticultural incarnation of me, Margaret Roach. My life list also includes stints as garden editor at Newsday in New York, one of the country’s largest daily newspapers, and Martha Stewart Living, where I was the magazine’s first garden editor and until 2008 was editorial director over all of the company’s content: magazines, books, and internet.”

Margaret Roach is currently the Senior Internet Consultant for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, advising their digital group on how to best translate the Martha brands—Living, Everyday Food, Weddings, Body+Soul—and the company’s 17-year archive of multi-media content into compelling internet tools and features.

Margaret’s current bibliography includes:

A Way to Garden: A Hands-On Primer for Every Season, Named Best Garden Book of the Year by Garden Writers’ Association of America.

Groundcovers – part of the Burpee American Gardening Series.

Co-authored with Ken Druse The Natural Habitat Garden

Thank you, Margaret, for extending your generosity in helping sponsor WordCamp Chicago!  Please visit Margaret’s various sites to learn more about all of the wonderous projects she’s involved in.  See you in Chicago!

Speaker Spotlight: Doug Hanna

Doug HannaI’m looking forward to hearing Doug Hanna speak at WordCamp Chicago on the topic of the WordPress Showcase. For those of you who are not aware – or who haven’t taken a good long look at it – the WordPress Showcase is a section of the official WordPress site where they show off WordPress being used in innovative and creative ways across the vast world wide web (aka: www). The goal of the Showcase is to show the world what WordPress can do – and only a small number of sites are showcased on this site, so the ones you see in the spotlight are exceptional executions of the WordPress platform; including WordPress.Org, WordPress MU, BuddyPress and WordPress.com.

Doug Hanna has spoken at several WordCamps around the country and works for Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and Akismet.com, as a “Communications Engineer.” At Automattic, Doug spends most of his time running the day-to-day operations of the WordPress.org Showcase and helping to support WordPress.com users.

At WordCamp Chicago, we’re looking forward to hearing what it takes to manage the day to day operations of the WordPress Showcase, including criteria for site submission, things to avoid and what’s in store for the future of the WordPress Showcase.

Can’t wait!
