Julie will be presenting Surviving Support: 10 Tips for Saving Your Users and Yourself on Sunday in the General Interest track

Julie Cameron is a frontend developer for Articulate working in the metro-Detroit area. She is the sole developer and support-provider of the open source SlickQuiz plugins for jQuery and WordPress.

Julie is a fan of Sassy CSS and modular architecture, responsive web design, and is a student of JavaScript and self-improvement.

Why do you use WordPress?
It’s an extremely flexible tool that can be utilized in a wide variety of ways, and is especially useful in getting up and running quickly.

What would you say to convince someone to attend a WordCamp?
The WordPress user community spans all segments of society and WordCamp brings that variety together. The stories and ideas and knowledge that comes out of these gatherings are remarkable, insightful, and cutting-edge. It’s an invaluable opportunity if you’re at all involved with WordPress development.

What is your favorite WordPress project you have worked on recently?
Well, I’ll have to go ahead and say my own project – the SlickQuiz plugin. It’s been picking up a lot of steam lately. User adoption has been fueling feature implementation, so it just keeps getting better and better.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to start or grow a WordPress based business?
Research, research, research. Know the ins-and-outs of WordPress and it’s theming and plugin systems. Know what you can and can’t do (and what you shouldn’t do) with WordPress, but don’t be afraid to take risks and push the envelop. And lastly, do NOT forget about user support. Have a plan.

The Codex, of course!

I’m a co-founder of the up and coming Girl Develop It chapter in Ann Arbor, Michigan! Our goal is to empower and assist women interested in getting into and advancing in the tech industry. We’ll be focused on teaching modern develop best practices and making sure students have something to show for it.
