My architectural history professor, Richard Betts, used to say that in terms of architectural influence, Chicago is the third great city in the world, after Athens and Paris. Chicago is where modern architecture – steel-frame construction, the skyscraper – was born at the turn of the 20th century. Taking place in the Lounge, we’re hoping to connect people looking for work with people looking to hire. If you fit either of those categories, feel free to show up! We’ll give you a color-coded sticker (Red=Hiring, Blue=Looking for Work) where you can write what you do or what you are looking for. No need to sign up in advance, just show up! And don’t worry, you’ve still got an hour for lunch afterwards… maybe with some new friends or business connections!

Bring your questions and your admin login to the Happiness Bar, in the Arts room, and one of WordCamp Chicago’s friendly volunteers will help you sort our your website.

The Happiness Bar is a live help desk, where WordPress professionals sit, and wait, for attendees to ask them a question. Often populated with WordCamp speakers, organizers or volunteers, a rag-tag group of WordPress professionals are always around to help!

WordCamp Chicago Afterparty on the Rooftop!

One of the best parts of WordCamps are the networking opportunities and “hallway conversations,” where attendees, speakers, and sponsors can hang out, chat WordPress, and get to know each other better. While we have plenty of opportunities to do so this year, none is more well known than the WordCamp Afterparty!

This year, the afterparty is a private event in the 3rd floor Great Room and the gorgeous Rooftop Terrace at the University Center, one floor up from the conference center. Starting at 6:30pm on Saturday (right after WordCamp is over for the day), we will have dinner & appetizers (first come, first served), drinks, and lots of great conversation, all included in your ticket price! We hope you’ll join us (and hope for great weather)!

You must bring your badge (obtained at registration) for entry.

We love to have a great time at WordCamp Chicago, but as always, remember that this is a professional event, and we encourage everyone to conduct themselves in a respectful manner. Be safe, have fun, and check out the Code of Conduct if you have questions.

Networking lunches

Join a small group of attendees who share your interests at a local restaurant. Discussion to be lead by one of our amazing speakers. Choose from:

  • Education: how to use WordPress for teaching. At Plymouth Restaurant rooftop, group leader TBA.

Architecture walking tour

After the fire of 1871, Chicago had to rebuild from the ground up. Innovations in technology and design made it the birthplace of modern architecture. Join Emily Barney and Clare Parkinson for a walking tour of architectural history from the old-school masonry of the Monadnock block to Mies Van der Rohe’s minimalist Federal Building. We’ll be getting boxed lunches from CafeCito – orders will be taken at sign-up.

Please note, for all organized lunches:

  • Space is limited, first come, first served.
  • Sign up at registration when you arrive in the morning.
  • All participants are responsible for the cost of their own lunch.

Lightning talks

In the Engineer (Loop/River) Room. John Havlik, Brian Busche, and Joel Bronkowski will give 10-minute talks about their experience and current projects.
